In a rivalry that is so close year in and year out, the East Kentwood and Hudsonville football games tend to come down to just a handful of plays. Tonight was no different as an interception inside the red-zone during the game’s last minute by Hudsonville’s Jake Hoekstra sealed a 25-18 victory.
Hudsonville scored on their first drive as they took eight plays to go forty-eight yards, capped off by a thirty-six yard run by Sam Baine. On the ensuing kickoff, Kentwood’s Andre Welch went 96 yards to the end zone to tie the game at seven.
The Eagles would respond on their next two drives as they scored on both possessions. Cam McDonald kicked a 33 yard field goal, then Mike Ouding ran eight yards for a touchdown. After a two point conversion, Hudsonville led 18-7.
Evan Mayday threw his first touchdown of the game on a 40 yard strike to Brandon Browley just a minute before halftime to cut the margin to three headed into the locker room.
Neither team scored in the game’s third quarter as Hudsonville forced another turnover, but could not capitalize, instead punting the ball away. After stopping the Falcons on downs, Hudsonville was driving the ball down the field headed to the fourth quarter with the 18-15 lead.
On the first play of the quarter, Jack Mandryk ran for a touchdown to put the Eagles up ten points. East Kentwood got a field goal with three minutes to play by Jacob Crabtree to cut the lead back to seven.
Electing to kick the ball away, the Falcons needed a stop in order to get the ball back with an opportunity to tie the game. After a forced three and out, East Kentwood got the football at midfield with just over one minute left to play. The Falcons got a quick strike and reached the fifteen yard line with thirty-eight seconds left in the game.
Evan Mayday rolled out and his pass was tipped by Dalton Agers before it ended up in the hands of Jake Hoesktra, sealing the deal. This was the fifth turnover that the Hudsonville defense forced in the ball game.
With the win, Hudsonville moves to 3-0, and they open league play at 1-0. East Kentwood falls to 2-1, and they are now 0-1 in the OK Red. Next week, Hudsonville will take on Grandville, while East Kentwood faces Forest Hills Northern.
