Comstock Park and the Coopersville Broncos faced off Friday night in the OK Blue Conference openers for both teams. Coopersville, who had not scored in four straight games against the Panthers, scored first when Riley Johnson hit Nate Lemieux on a 13 yard slant pass into the end zone.  They then went for the 2 point conversion and didn’t convert.
The Broncos kicked off to the Panthers which they took to their own 45 yard line.  The first play from scrimmage saw Jo Jo Whitley explode off of the Right tackle and streak down the sideline for a 55 yard score.  The PAT by Nate Hughes was good, making the score 7-6.
A big play in the contest took place when Coopersville fumbled at the 3 yard line as they were about to score and it was recovered by Comstock Park in the end zone for a touchback.  This score would of put the Broncos out front.
Comstock Park took advantage of this turnover and scored 5 seconds into the 2nd quarter on Jo Jo Whitley’s second touchdown run, this one from nine yards. Nate Hughes missed the PAT, as Coopersville’s Jake Domanski was able to break through the line and block the kick, making the score 13-6.
The Broncos responded with a big play on a quick screen pass to Cayden Schneider from Riley Johnson.  Cayden then scampered for 64 yards down the near sideline for the touchdown.  Coopersville went for the 2 point conversion to take the lead, however, the attempt failed again, leaving the score Comstock Park 13 and Coopersville 12.
The Panthers were able to put a drive together with some passing from Chase Brown and hard running from Jo Jo Whitley, who finished the drive with a 22 yard run off right tackle.  Nate Hughes PAT was good making it Comstock Park 20 and Coopersville 12 at the half.
The second half began to see the Coopersville Broncos make mental mistakes.  Riley Johnson threw a couple of interceptions, one of which lead to seven points by the Panthers.  The Panthers scored 28 unanswered points in the 3rd and 4th quarters as  Jo Jo Whitley scored two more touchdowns, one was a 53 yard run and the other was an 8 yard plunge.
The final score was Comstock Park 41 and Coopersville 18, the fifth year in a row that the Panthers have beat the Broncos.  These teams will continue league play next week as the Broncos take on Sparta next week and Comstock Park takes on Allendale.
