Hudsonville opened their 2016 season Thursday night as they took on the Grand Ledge Comets, a team that reached the Division 1 semifinals a year ago. With a preseason #9 ranking in the Power Poll, the Eagles have high expectations of their own this fall. Led by a handful of three year varsity players, an experienced Hudsonville team pulled out a narrow 21-14 victory.
Senior Dalton Agers spearheaded the Eagles offense as he scored all three touchdowns in this contest. In the first quarter, he scored at the 9:02 mark on a 37 yard run to open the scoring column at 7-0.
Less than three minutes later, Agers found the end zone again, this time from six yards, and Hudsonville led 14-0.
Grand Ledge responded with a touchdown in the first quarter to cut the margin to seven, but the defense on both sides solidified as neither side scored in the game’s second quarter.
Hudsonville opened the second half with a nine play, fifty-five yard touchdown drive, capped off with a three yard run by Dalton Agers, his third score of the game, to take a 21-7 lead.
Grand Ledge scored with seven minutes to go off of a Hudsonville turnover to cut the lead to seven, but failed to capitalize as an interception sealed their fate.
With the 21-14 win, the Hudsonville Eagles improve to 1-0 on the year, and next week they will travel to Holt to take on the Rams, who were defeated by Grandville 44-0 Thursday night.
